A Generalized Dual-Frequency Ratio (DFR) Approach for Rain Retrievals

Abstract The dual-frequency ratio of radar reflectivity factors (DFR) has been shown to be a useful quantity as it is independent the number concentration particle size distribution and primarily function mass-weighted diameter D m . A drawback DFR-related methods for rain estimation, however, nonunique relationship between DFR. At Ku- Ka-band frequencies, two solutions exist when DFR less than zero. This ambiguity generates multiple range profiles parameters. We investigate characteristics these both initial-value (forward) final-value (backward) forms equations. To choose one among many possible , concentration, rate R independently measured path attenuations are used. For backward approach, possibility exists dispensing with externally by achieving consistency input output attenuations. tested means simulation based on disdrometer-measured raindrop distributions results compared simplified version operational – method.
